Above The Sheets is the brainchild of Michael Chapman. He specializes in portraiture and lifestyle photography.
‘The project is an exploration of the human body, where I capture what the participants like or dislike about their own bodies,’ Above all, it’s a celebration of the variety of body types.
‘I kept seeing people talking about the “standard” body – the perfect six pack and Adonis style that’s always held up as the ideal and put on a pedestal. I wanted to show that everyone is different and that’s ok.
‘When you remove everything but their underwear, within the most private of spaces – a bedroom – you can capture the essence of the individual.
‘I’ve had a lot of guys who identify as gay volunteer but everyone is welcome’
Chapman started taking the photos in January. He is keen to hear from anyone who would like to take part – although it helps if they live in or around London. Obviously, they must also be comfortable about posing in their underwear.
‘My rules are simple. If someone asks to take part I’ll photograph irrespective of race, sex, gender, or disability. I’ve had a lot of guys who identify as gay volunteer but everyone is welcome.’
As for the future, Chapman is currently happy to keep posting images to social media and to see where the project takes him. He wouldn’t rule out producing a book at some stage, but for now, is just happy with the response he’s getting.
‘I’ve already had a couple of messages from people to thank me for featuring normal people and how refreshing it is, and for me that’s enough.’
